Founded as the New Brunswick City Hospital in 1884, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital today is the flagship facility of the RWJBarnabas Health system. The hospital changed its name in 1889 to the John Wells Memorial Hospital when Grace Tileston Wells, a community leader, donated a building in honor of her late husband, John Wells.
