The former president of blood diagnostics company Theranos Inc. risked his own cash to rescue the company, his attorney said, and plans to fight Securities and Exchange Commission charges that he participated in a scheme to defraud investors of $700 million. Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani - the onetime boyfriend of Theranos founder, CEO and Chairman Elizabeth Holmes , according to the SEC - was painted by attorney Jeffrey Coopersmith as a selfless entrepreneur dedicated to the company's mission of empowering patients "with access to their own health care information at a low cost."
